Labyrinth kate mosse series5/30/2023 LABYRINTH is very much a Girl's Own story: a grail quest in which women aren't helpless creatures to be rescued, or decorative bystanders, but central to the action, with the capacity to change history * OBSERVER *Īn elegantly written time-slip novel set in France. intriguing.passionate book * SUNDAY TIMES * there are also some powerful dramatic scenes: the climactic moments where the good and evil women meet and battle it out are particularly compelling. This is a novel clearly fuelled by an authorial obsession with a history, region and concept. the story line runs on knowledge and fun - Carcassonne never looked so good - Anthony Sattin * SUNDAY TIMES * reminiscent of those twin goddesses of popular historical fiction, Jean Plaidy and Mary Renault * GUARDIAN *Ī gripping holy grail quest. Mosse wears her learning so lightly, knitting her historical research so neatly into her narrative. Saturated with a passionate understanding of the region's past in a way that puts more conventional historical accounts to shame. Pacey and addictive - Kate Saunders * THE TIMES * the result is entirely compelling and full of incidental pleasures - Christina Koning * THE TIMES * The author has combined an ingenious adventure story with a wonderfully detailed account of the historical background of the Languedoc.

Last port of call by jean grainger5/30/2023 Last Port of Call is the first book in The Queenstown Series. Unexpectedly, fate takes a hand, and mother and daughter find themselves thrown a lifeline, one that inextricably links them to the stories of men, women and children for whom Queenstown was the last-ever sight of Ireland as they sailed away to new lands and new lives. Published: 2020 Last Port of Call: The Queenstown. The small port town is shaken to its foundations at the loss of the unsinkable ship, but the revelation of a long-held secret means that Harp and Rose have a much more pressing issue to solve, one that could destroy them if they cannot find a solution. Published: 2018 The Emerald Horizon (The Star and the Shamrock Book 2) 688. The day Titanic sails from Queenstown, taking with it the hopes and dreams of so many, Harp’s life too is devastated. Nobody ever visits the Cliff House, but Harp, Rose and Henry have a happy life together, each accepting the idiosyncrasies of the others. She behaves not as a servant should, but as someone who belongs at the ancestral home of eccentric loner Henry Devereaux. The local women envy her grace and poise while the men admire her beauty. Her mother, Rose, is the reserved and ladylike housekeeper at the Cliff House. She would rather spend her days in the library of the grand Georgian house that she sees as her home than playing on the streets with other children. Jean Grainger has written a series of 29 books. Twelve-year-old Harp Delaney is an unusual child, quiet and intelligent far beyond her years. Most Recommended Books presents the Jean Grainger series written by Jean Grainger.

What the wind knows book5/30/2023 What the Wind Knows had an Outlander feel to it, due to the time traveling, but it was so much more than that. This story is rich in history and romance and I was swept away. Anne discovers things that she never knew, but yet, she always knew. The talk of the past and how these people are no longer with us always makes my heart clinch. Even as I’m typing now, there are tears in my eyes. I was noticing things that had me breathless and speechless. Without giving away spoilers I will just say this, at 10% I started to cry and I didn’t know why. There are small details that connect me and I can’t even explain what that feels like. In fact, I’m pretty sure this story was written just for me. And if you listen, they will tell you all the stories and sing every song.įrom the moment I read the prologue I knew this story was going to hit me harder than any other book I’ve read lately. They’ve seen and heard all that has ever been said or done. The wind and water know all the earth’s secrets.

Francesca zappia books5/30/2023 They’re just not prepared to host them–nor defend them in court. They’re not saying that commercialized fanworks are against the law. People who want to do fandom differently, including making money, are welcome to go build their own site with their own money or their own donated labor.ĪO3 does not forbid commercial links because they think fans making money from fanworks is immoral but them making money ( to run the damn site) is fine.ĪO3 forbids commercial links because they are making a very specific claim about the legality of fanworks, and that claim is about noncommercial fanworks. It was built by us to house the type of fandom culture we liked. Like Anne Rice is dead and this isn’t the 90s anymore, people are making money from fandom please catch up with the times.ĪO3 was built by a bunch of us with our free donated labor for the purpose of being a space free from commercial spam. My opinion on AO3 is that it’s an important asset but i still find it scummy that they’ll ask for money but when their users try to ask for money they slam them with their non-monetization rules. I’d go bigger and just say that they’re the conservatives/reactionaries of fandom–or, to frame it differently, this is how conservative and authoritarian ideologies express themselves in the context of Fandom. The people who believe this crap are the anti-vaxxers of fandom. If OTW weren’t around, this wouldn’t be “scaremongering”: It would be the inescapable status quo.

The year of lear by james shapiro5/30/2023 He ended this astonishing year with a third masterpiece no less steeped in current events and concerns: Antony and Cleopatra. It was against this background that Shakespeare finished Lear, a play about a divided kingdom, then wrote a tragedy that turned on the murder of a Scottish king, Macbeth. The aborted plot renewed anti-Catholic sentiment and laid bare divisions in the kingdom. The foiled Gunpowder Plot would have blown up the king and royal family along with the nation’s political and religious leadership. It was a memorable year in England as well-a terrorist plot conceived by a small group of Catholic gentry had been uncovered at the last hour. But that year, at age forty-two, he found his footing again, finishing a play he had begun the previous autumn- King Lear-then writing two other great tragedies, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra. In the years leading up to 1606, Shakespeare’s great productivity had ebbed. “ The Year of Lear is irresistible-a banquet of wisdom” ( The New York Times Book Review ). Preeminent Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro, author of Shakespeare in a Divided America, shows how the tumultuous events in 1606 influenced three of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies written that year- King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra.

Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier5/30/2023 And worse, befriend the gravedigger’s son.Īs the girls grow up and the new century finds its feet, as cars replace horses and electricity outshines gas lighting, Britain emerges from the shadows of oppressive Victorian values to a golden Edwardian summer. To their mutual distaste, the families are inextricably linked when their daughters become friends behind the tombstones. The Waterhouses revere the late Queen and cling to Victorian traditions the Colemans look forward to a more modern society. One is decorated with a sentimental angel, the other an elaborate urn. Two families visit neighboring graves in a fashionable London cemetery. It is 1901, the day after Queen Victoria’s death and the ‘I’ in this opening is Kitty Coleman, one of several narrators in this novel set in Edwardian England. Well, I thought, here’s a novel way to begin the new century. I did not know whether to be shocked or amused. The head of blond hair beside me was decidedly not my husband’s. I woke this morning with a stranger in my bed. It’s been sitting unread for several years on the to-be read shelves and I’ve been meaning to read it for ages after reading her earlier book, Girl with a Pearl Earring. I really enjoyed reading Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier. |
